Pictures of Elvis Presley Performing in His
Iconic Jumpsuits During the 1970s
Bill Belew, an American costume designer, was credited for having designed Elvis’s costumes and personal wardrobe from 1968 until his death in 1977. The jumpsuit was Bill's idea. He was inspired by clothing from the Napoleonic era, particularly the high collars. Jumpsuits were practical for Elvis, since they allowed him to move around onstage without being concerned about snagging his clothes on something.
Some of Elvis’ jumpsuits were used for only a few tours, some for several years and some that we don't know when or whether they were used at all.
Whilst many of Elvis' jumpsuits were considered flamboyant, none would have been considered ostentatious in any way, even in conservative cities. While the authorities may have received complaints about some offensive musical acts, Elvis' shows were always suitable for all viewers.
Elvis's ‘Blue Armadillo’ jumpsuit—a sleeveless, bell-bottom jumpsuit with matching jacket and rhinestone details, sold for $250,000, including the buyer's premium, the high end of its estimate and the most expensive item at auction.
Famed as Elvis’ favourite performance costume, the Peacock jumpsuit sold for a record $300,000 at auction. Worn during his 1974 concert appearances, the suit has a green and blue peacock on the front and back.
The suits are organized by the years that Elvis wore them, to show his progression in selecting the jumpsuits for each season. Some were used for several years, others for only a few tours. Here, we take a look back at The King of Rock and Roll's iconic style in the 1970s and what would become his signature piece later in his career—the jumpsuit.
